Ophthalmologists, how to "play well" with the ophthalmic surgical microscope?

The images in the eyepieces of the ophthalmic surgical microscope should coincide consistently. This mainly refers to the binocular solid microscope, where the overlap of the images seen by both eyes of the surgeon should be good. Detection method: Use any one of the eyepieces from a pair in the microscope, adjust its diopter to 0, and observe with one eye. Place a piece of white paper marked with a "cross" at the object position, and adjust it until the "cross" is clear. Move the white paper so that the intersection of the "cross" is located in the eyepiece's field of view. At the four intersection points of the "cross" and the field edge, draw four lines, and then observe the other eyepiece to ensure it is in the same position; when observing with both eyes simultaneously, they should completely coincide.

There are two types of illumination methods for ophthalmic surgical microscopes:

① Internal light source - the light source is combined within the microscope, and the direction of illumination is coaxial with the microscope, suitable for illuminating deep tissues.

② External light source - the light source is located outside the microscope, divided into coaxial and non-coaxial illumination systems. To ensure sufficient illumination on the object surface, the light source mostly uses halogen lamps or introduces optical fibers into the microscope, directing light through the objective lens to the surgical field. Some surgical microscopes have both internal and external illumination systems, as well as illumination systems with slit lamp microscopes. High-quality ophthalmic surgical microscopes have completely coaxial light sources.

Ophthalmic surgical microscopes are required to clearly observe both shallow and deep areas during surgery, with strong stereoscopic perception. When operating within a limited range of depth, it is not necessary to adjust the focal length. Therefore, there should be a certain range of depth of field requirements for surgical microscopes. The main lens is at a 45° angle to the microscope body, while the assistant lens is at a 30° angle to the microscope body. When adjusting the microscope's focal length, it should be adjusted until the eyepiece's field of view is clear.
