Refraction is the main method for clarifying refractive errors and occupies a considerable amount of work in clinical practice. The traditional retinal shadow test method was time-consuming, labor-intensive, and difficult to master. After the 1970s, new automatic refractors emerged, using infrared, electronic, and computational technologies to examine the convergence of light after it enters the eye.
The automatic refractor can perform diagnostic refraction for soft contact lens fitting, requiring no dilation and quickly measuring the degree of refraction. The results from the automatic refractor are all printed automatically, requiring no conversion, and it generally takes a few seconds to a few minutes to measure a patient, quickly determining the degree of refractive error and providing accurate refractive power and pupillary distance for lens correction.
The accuracy of the automatic refractor is influenced by many factors, such as poor cooperation from the patient's head and eyes, movement, and insufficient focus on the target within the refractor, which can lead to inadequate relaxation of accommodation and inevitably affect the accuracy of the refractive measurement results, even resulting in significant differences in repeated measurements. For children and patients with refractive media opacities, the error in measurements from the computer refractor can be large, and it may even fail to detect the refractive power. Therefore, using the refractive power determined by the computer as the basis for fitting glasses is inappropriate. The computer refractor cannot replace the skills of a refractionist and lens correction; it only provides useful reference for manual refraction.
